The Story of Gathoni Tea Farm

Long before Kenya became a world leader in tea, a curious experiment began in the misty hills of Limuru. It was 1903 when G.W.L. Caine planted a few tea seedlings from India. He had no idea that those tiny plants would grow into a story that would change Kenya forever. That quiet patch of land, now known as Gathoni Tea Farm, became one of the first farms in Kenya and Africa where tea was ever planted.

At first, the tea bushes were just for decoration, but soon people noticed their beauty — and the soothing drink their leaves made. Word spread quickly. What began as a small experiment turned into a legacy. Over the years, generations have walked these same fields, feeling the mist, touching the glossy leaves, and learning how Kenya’s famous tea story began right here.

Today, when you sip a cup of Kenyan tea, you’re tasting more than a drink — you’re tasting a piece of Gathoni Farm’s living history, rooted deep in Limuru’s timeless soil
